Hal and Sidra Stone are the creators of the Voice Dialogue system. They have devoted their lives to exploring and mapping the human psyche, with particular emphasis on personality and relationships. From these insights, based on decades of clinical practice, arose their Voice Dialogue system, which allows, when properly used, unprecedented ease of access to structures in the human psyche known as sub-personalities.
Their discoveries have profoundly influenced the understanding of personality, and centres for Voice Dialogue have been set up all over the world. Those who practice Voice Dialogue, professionally or privately, find it an incredibly useful, powerful and practical tool, extremely helpful in untangling the complexity of the personality and taking a person to a new level of awareness.
The Voice Dialogue Series presents the complete life’s work of Doctors Hal and Sidra Stone. Together they have over 70 years of in depth research and study into this unique, practical and very powerful way to improve all areas of life.
What is Voice Dialogue?
When people are described for example as “pushy, nice, head strong, manipulative, a hard worker, insecure, a Mother Theresa, brainy, reliable, a yes person, aloof, or always helpful”, we are describing a characteristic in their personality that stands out above the rest.
In Voice Dialogue, we see each of these characteristics as sub-personalities or selves of the individual. Because these selves have become so dominant in the person, we often mistakenly assume that this is who the person is. What we are not aware of is that there is an opposite self to this dominant self that is not seen very often. For example, the hard working part of us doesn’t want us to rest and in its extreme has us working from morning till night. So the part of us that would put our feet up can rarely come out. This could be one reason why it takes many people a week out of their two week holiday to relax and stop having to do, do, do.
Voice Dialogue is a method that helps us to become aware of the many different selves that are either running our life or need to be brought more into our life in order to achieve balance. This awareness is the first essential step in making the kind of changes we want. As this self-awareness grows, we experience the unfolding of the uniqueness of who we are as human beings as well as how all our relationships are impacted by these sub-personalities.
In Voice Dialogue, through an actual conversation with your sub-personalities, you get to experience just how much these selves either run your life or need to be brought into your life. This seems weird or strange at first, but as these conversations continue, you become aware of just how real these selves are. This process of dialoguing can be exciting and scary at the same time.
With a deepening awareness of ourselves and others, you are able to understand situations in your life differently and make choices that you’ve never been able to make before. That’s exciting. For example, when I become aware of how much the Self that says “yes” to people but now am aware of the Self that can say “no” sometimes, I have “true” choice in my life. With being able to choose ‘yes’ and ‘no’, I can enjoy my relationships more because I commit to doing what fits for me.
From Hal and Sidra Stone
Each of us “contains multitudes”. We are made up of many selves, identifying with some and rejecting others. This over-identification with some selves and the loss of wholeness that comes from the rejection of others, can create imbalances and blind spots. This work is about embracing all the selves. This dance of the selves is an amazing process and we see the dynamics of the world around us shift as our internal world changes.
We invite you to explore as we did: yourself, your relationships and how your own consciousness affects the world in which you live! Our work is dedicated to this exploration. It is an expression of our own personal journeys as well as our commitment to the process of our relationship. The ideas we present to you are alive, and they change as we change and as our understanding deepens. They will continue to change, we hope, and, as a result of this, we will, over the years, continue to bring you additional ideas and new information.
